TV Globo affiliate NSC TV selects Appear to power satellite-to-IP migration in Brazil

X5 and X20 platforms connect six locations across Santa Catarina, enabling resilient IP distribution and centralised broadcasting operations

Appear ASA (Appear, OSE:APR), a global leader in live production technology, today announced that NSC TV, a leading TV Globo affiliate in Brazil, has selected the X Platform to migrate its distribution network across the state of Santa Catarina from satellite to IP. The deployment connects six locations, enabling NSC to centralise broadcasting operations while laying the foundation for future remote sports and studio production.

For NSC, whose programming reaches more than 97% of the state’s population, the migration creates an opportunity to rethink how content and production resources move across its regional network. The new infrastructure supports centralised distribution today, with the flexibility to carry live contribution feeds as NSC introduces remote production workflows.

“Our aim is to build a more connected operation, where our regional teams can draw on shared resources while continuing to deliver the local coverage our audiences value,” said Alisson Heidemann, Head of Technology, NSC TV. “Appear gives us a resilient foundation for our move to IP, with the flexibility to support remote production as our needs develop. We can address our immediate distribution requirements while getting more long-term value from the same investment.”

The deployment combines an Appear X20 at NSC’s Florianópolis headquarters with main and backup X5 platforms at each of its five regional sites: Joinville, Blumenau, Criciúma, Chapecó and Joaçaba. The compact X5 brings AVC/HEVC encoding, decoding and Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) connectivity to the regional facilities, while the X20 provides central processing and aggregation, with capacity to support additional services as requirements grow. Support for 10-bit 4:2:2 video and HDR gives NSC flexibility across different contribution and distribution workflows.

Appear was selected following a rigorous proof of concept and competitive evaluation. Its ability to support multiple applications on a common platform gives NSC scope to extend the role of the infrastructure as its operational requirements evolve.

Broadcast resilience is central to the design. Main and backup X5 platforms, seamless switching between internet service providers and SMPTE ST 2022-7 protection help maintain service continuity across the network. Centralised monitoring gives NSC’s engineering teams visibility of system performance across all six locations, helping them identify and respond to issues remotely.

Beyond the distribution migration, NSC plans to use the infrastructure for remote sports and studio production. SRT connectivity will allow live feeds from regional locations to reach the central production facility in Florianópolis, helping NSC make greater use of its existing production resources and reduce the need to duplicate infrastructure at individual venues.

“The value of moving to IP goes beyond changing how a signal gets from one location to another,” said Luis Perez, Sales Director LATAM, Appear. “NSC is establishing a common foundation for distribution today and new production workflows in the future.

By combining the compact X5 at regional sites with the capacity of the X20 at headquarters, it can build on its investment as requirements grow, while maintaining the high-quality and resilience its daily broadcast services demand.”
