Media City Qatar – What It Takes to Build the Next Generation of Media Talent
What It Takes to Build the Next Generation of Media Talent
| Media City Qatar is developing the next generation of media talent in the Middle East by creating pathways to industry, experience, and opportunity. |
The next generation of media talent is increasingly drawn to careers in storytelling, creativity, and innovation. However, research and industry discussions often highlight ongoing challenges for students and early-career professionals, including limited access to practical experience, professional networks, and clear pathways into the sector. Addressing these gaps is increasingly seen as important to supporting the development of the next generation of media talent.
Early-career professionals are already central to the creative economy. UNESCO estimates that the cultural and creative sectors provide nearly 50 million jobs worldwide and employ more people aged 15 to 29 than any other sector. At the same time, Deloitte’s 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey found that 88% of Gen Z respondents value on-the-job learning and practical experience, while 86% consider mentorship and guidance important to their development.
These findings demonstrate that building the next generation of media talent requires clear pathways for young professionals to enter the industry, gain hands-on experience, connect with practitioners, and access opportunities to grow. Through partnerships with education institutions, support for entrepreneurs, industry initiatives, and its growing community of licensed companies, Media City Qatar is helping create these pathways while contributing to the continued development of the sector.
Today, more than 500 licensed companies operate within Media City Qatar across Gaming & Interactive; Screen, Broadcast & Music; Tech, Digital & Social; and Agencies & Support Services. Around 60% are startups, and these licensed companies have contributed to the creation of more than 1,250 jobs in Qatar. These figures show why talent development cannot sit separately from industry growth. Companies need skilled people, while emerging professionals need companies that can give them meaningful work.
Start Before the First Job
| The path into media starts before the first job, and Media City Qatar is creating opportunities to build the experience and skills to enter the industry. |
The pathway into media begins long before a first job application. While early-career professionals often graduate with the theoretical foundations in journalism, production, communications, and digital media, many have limited opportunities to experience the pace, collaboration, and expectations of a professional environment.
To bridge this gap, Media City Qatar has partnered with Qatar University and Northwestern University in Qatar to connect students and recent graduates with professional opportunities. Through partnerships with CNN and Euronews, young journalists and creators have gained access to professional development, international exposure, newsroom internships, and CNN Academy’s global journalism simulation programs. Northwestern University in Qatar students have also completed internships at Euronews in Brussels, giving them direct experience inside an international newsroom.
Media City Qatar has also worked with Qatar University to deliver the Euronews Academy Bootcamp, which focuses on digital and mobile journalism. Workshops delivered with Al-Monitor and Semafor have supported leadership development and introduced participants to different editorial and commercial approaches within the industry.
Opportunities to explore media careers also extend beyond classrooms and formal training programs. The 321 Esports Lounge, Powered by Media City Qatar, at the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, gives young people and gaming enthusiasts a space to experience competitive gaming, content creation, and esports broadcasting firsthand. Equipped with gaming stations, consoles, and a professional broadcast setup, the lounge offers an accessible entry point into an industry where technology, storytelling, production, and audience engagement converge.
This enables participants to experiment, create, and collaborate while discovering how their interests can translate into careers and developing practical skills valued across the media industry.
From First Opportunity to Future Employer
Media City Qatar is building pathways that take emerging talent from first opportunity to future leadership.
Creating opportunities is only part of the equation; emerging talent also needs platforms where their work can be seen, tested, and recognized. Through The Next in Arts, its three-year partnership with Art Basel Qatar, Media City Qatar is supporting artists as they develop their practice, engage with established professionals in the creative industry, and showcase their work to international audiences. By connecting emerging creatives with global platforms and industry networks, the program helps translate creative potential into professional opportunity. This was reflected in the program’s first winning commission, “The Loudest Grain” by Yasamin Shaikhi, which was presented at Art Basel Qatar 2026.
These initiatives help create a continuous pathway from education to industry. Emerging talent can gain early industry exposure, develop practical skills through real-world experiences, build professional networks, and transition into the industry. As their experience grows, those same individuals may go on to launch their own media ventures, contribute to the creative economy, and create opportunities for the next generation of talent. This way, talent development becomes a continuous cycle that strengthens both individuals and the wider media sector.
This is where entrepreneurship becomes an important part of talent development. Through Media City Qatar’s work with Qatar Development Bank and its Creative and Cultural Industries Hub, SCALE7, media startups can access workshops, masterclasses, hackathons, pitching opportunities, investors, and industry experts. The aim is to help promising ideas move beyond the early stages and become sustainable businesses.
When those companies create jobs and develop new talent, the cycle begins again. The people who once needed their first opportunity can become the ones providing it to the next generation, strengthening the media ecosystem over the long term.
A Shared Industry Responsibility
Building a sustainable media talent pipeline requires collaboration across the entire ecosystem. Education institutions, industry, entrepreneurs, investors, and experienced practitioners each contribute to helping emerging talent move from learning to employment and, ultimately, to leadership. Through partnerships with universities, support for startups, professional development initiatives, and its growing community of licensed companies, Media City Qatar is helping connect these stages into a continuous talent pathway. In doing so, it is creating opportunities for individuals to build impactful careers, for founders to grow new businesses, and for companies to access the skills they need, strengthening the media sector while helping shape its future from Qatar.
