Telos Alliance – What’s Next After IP?

For much of the last twenty years, the media technology industry has been focused on a single goal: moving away from dedicated hardware and toward IP-based, software-driven workflows.

It’s been a remarkable transformation. Broadcasters that once depended on racks full of purpose-built gear now deploy applications in data centers, virtual machines, and cloud environments. Production teams can work across facilities, cities, or continents. Infrastructure has become more flexible, scalable, and accessible than ever before.

But, as often happens with technology, solving one challenge has exposed another.

Our industry has become very good at moving media from place to place. We have standards for it, protocols for it, and countless tools designed to package, transport, route, and process audio and video. But many modern workflows still spend quite a lot of effort moving content between applications, rather than simply allowing applications to work together. That may sound like a subtle distinction, but it has significant implications for efficiency, scalability, and operational complexity.

As MediaTech suppliers and end users look ahead, one of the most important emerging trends is the industry’s growing focus on interoperability at the application level. The question is no longer simply “How do we transport this media?” Instead, it’s “How can applications share media, metadata, and processing resources more efficiently with lower latency?”

MXL, the Media Exchange Layer initiative (which Telos Alliance supports wholeheartedly) is one example of this shift in thinking. Rather than treating every application as a separate destination that requires media to be packaged, transported, and received, MXL explores a model where applications can share access to common media resources within a unified environment. The goal isn’t just to reduce latency, although that can certainly be a benefit; the larger objective is to simplify overall workflow design and reduce the operational overhead that usually comes along with large-scale virtualized deployments.

MXL may ultimately become the dominant framework for accomplishing this, but whether it does or not is almost beside the point. What’s more important is what it represents.

Across our industry, vendors and users both recognize that the next generation of media infrastructure can’t be built solely around transport technologies. Orchestration, resource sharing, interoperability, and workflow agility are where the conversation is at. Media organizations want systems that can scale quickly, adapt to changing production requirements, and integrate tools from multiple suppliers without massive engineering effort. In many ways, this reflects the broader maturing of cloud and virtualized production.

A decade ago, running media applications in the cloud felt revolutionary. Today, it’s often viewed as “another deployment option.” So, as cloud adoption matures, organizations are now asking tougher questions: How efficiently do these systems operate? How easily can they scale? How much operational complexity do they introduce? And how quickly can new capabilities be added when production requirements change? These are the questions driving interest in technologies that reduce friction between applications and make infrastructure more adaptable.

Another important lesson from initiatives like MXL is that the industry’s biggest challenges are rarely solved overnight. Organizations don’t rebuild facilities every year, and technology decisions made today will impact operations for five, seven, or even ten years. The facilities, platforms, and operational models being discussed today will influence purchasing decisions, staffing requirements, and infrastructure investments for years to come. That makes it important to think beyond immediate production requirements and consider where the industry may be heading next.

The bottom line is, your day-to-day priority will always be getting today’s content on the air, on the stream, or onto the platform. That’s the nature of our business. Deadlines are immediate and audiences expect flawless delivery. But the organizations that adapt most successfully are often the ones that reserve at least some attention for a different question: How will we be producing content five or ten years from now?

The answer to “What comes after IP?” may not be any single technology currently making headlines. More likely, it will be a combination of innovations, standards, and workflow models that continue to evolve over time. What’s important is that we take the time now to discern which way the wind is blowing, and prepare for what’s coming before it arrives.

The industry’s move to IP transformed media production. The next transformation will likely be less about replacing infrastructure and more about rethinking how applications, services, and people work together. And when that future arrives, the organizations that are paying attention today will be the ones positioned for greatest success.
